When I grow up....

I've always wanted to start a blog but lacked the motivation to do so.  Thankfully because of my awesome technology in the classroom class I'm taking, one of the assignments is to setup a blog.  Woohoo!  Motivation found.
So, why do I want to be a teacher.  This is kind of long story but at the risk of boring everyone I'll try and make it short and sweet.  Or at least readable.  So once upon a time I was an art major and it was taking forever to complete due to each class being 3 hours long and me working full time.  In the meantime of this long drawn out school process I met a wonderful man, got married and we had a baby.  After being a mommy for a bit I started back to school and found the art history class I had to take for my major very distasteful and inappropriate.  After discussing with a neighbor the situation she told me how her husband changed his major because of a similar situation.  Epiphany! Why can't I change my major, it was taking me forever, this art class was no good and you can't do anything fulfilling with an art major anyways unless you teach.  So I decided to start the Elementary Education program and become a teacher.  Thank heavens all that art time didn't go to waste, I had enough credits to get my art minor with them. Handy.  And honestly having my own child really brought the mommy instincts out of me in wanting to care for children and help them learn.  I'm not sure I would have really considered this major before hand.
So now as I go along in the program I'm starting to see what kind of teacher I really want to be.  Children, no matter personality, background, etc., really just want to feel loved and cared for.  I want to make sure that I'm that kind of teacher that a child can feel cared for and safe right when they walk into the classroom.  They won't be afraid to take a chance and answer a question or be scared to make a comment or let their imaginations flow.  I want to have an orderly classroom but still have fun and learn at the same time.  I want to make an impression and inspire.  I only hope that I can really figure out how to do this. So far I've had some excellent classes and teachers to get ideas from so I'll be sure to keep this in a safe place and work them in with my own thoughts.
And another woohoo for setting up this blog. Hopefully I'll actually post and get my ideas out. Even if it's only me that's reading them and feeding the fish : )
